First Flight!

I just have to tell you about a little incident that happened to me the other day. This was before the storm hit and early in the morning.

I had finished up the milking and was about to go do some weeding in the garden but decided to make a pit stop in the outhouse first. On my way out there I was thinking to myself that I really should bring my camera with me. The baby birds are getting so big I'm a bit shocked that none have fallen out of the nest and I wanted one more picture before they few away.

When they first hatched they were so itty bitty! 

By last week they were huge! Can't believe how fast they grew.

Anyway, I didn't feel like going back into the house for the camera as I was in a bit of a hurry to get into the garden. I approached with my usual caution to let the mom know I was there but she was already out and sitting on a tree making her tsk, tsk sound. She seemed a bit more agitated this morning but I just ignored her and went inside leaving the door partly open as usual. Wow! The babies looked almost fully grown. I was very sorry I didn't have my camera and almost went back right then to get it, but changed my mind. Really wanted to get to the weeding! So, I went about my business.... 

All of a sudden there was a huge flurry of wings! There was flapping around my head and fluttering everywhere and then four little bodies flew out the door for the first time. The fifth one couldn't seem to find the door and was fluttering violently against the little window. I gently helped him find the door and they were all away. 

Wow! I'm not sure if I gave them the push they needed to fly or if it was just chance that I happened to be there but what an experience!
