The Barn Floods

I'm not a fan of rain, not that I don't like it or appreciate it's necessity, but since it has been raining off and on for the last 9 days I'm becoming a little sick of it. Everything is soaked, then the unthinkable happened, we got more rain. I woke up about 2 am Saturday morning to the drumming of rain on the roof. It was pounding really and while some may find the music of rain to be soothing, I really don't. It keeps me awake and no matter what I do I can never fall back asleep if it is raining. Instead I lay there thinking what the morning would bring and dreading finding out.

Morning when it did come was glum and depressing. No sun, not even a hint of it, just heavy clouds and a fine mist still coming down. No matter, there is nothing to be done but get everything together for milking. First a cup of tea to give me time to wake up, then I gathered all the supplies and headed out to the barn, thinking to myself that the rain wouldn't be so bad if the sun would only come out afterwards.

But what was this?? Water everywhere!! There was no way to even get to the barn without walking through huge puddles which seemed more like small lakes.

Then the niggling thought entered my morning fog... what about the barn? Oh no! Would everyone be OK?

This is what greeted me as I neared the barn... everything was flooded.

Even the barn entrance was flooded completely. Thankfully as I entered the barn and was greeted by a chorus of hello's from the ladies and the babies I realized they were fine. Their pens were high and dry but the rest of the barn, most of it unused, was completely flooded, as was my milking area. I had no choice but to forestall milking until I was able to drag a lot of boards over to make way for the lovely ladies who do not like to get their feet wet.

Of course the boys were only too happy to watch me work while waiting impatiently for breakfast. They are just too adorable!

Long story short? I'm really hoping the rain stops soon and I am thrilled that Mountain Man spent all day yesterday building me a new milking station with a floor! It's not concrete, which would be best, but despite the continuing rain I was whistling a tune while milking this morning.

  1. Glo,

First let me say, congrats on the new trees!
9 days of rain, that's to much. With all that rain, there is no chance of it absorbing fast enough in the ground. Thank goodness your goats were okay. It wouldn't be so bad if it were a slow gentle rain. I will send so prayers in hopes you'll get sun and nice weather soon.
